First, a truck puts the items onto a conveyor belt. As everything moves down the belt, people remove the large items. Next, the items are sent to a screen. Pieces of cardboard move over the screen and are dumped into a container. The rest of the items fall through it. After this, a magnet takes out the steel cans, while glass bottles are removed from the belt and crushed. Now the only items left on the belt are plastic bottles. In the final step, these bottles move through an optical sorter, which sorts the plastic by type.
